In the beginning … Creation

So how and why did God create the world, the universe and everything?

Creatio ex nihlio means creation out of nothing.

God is not like a Blue Peter presenter, he does not find some empty toilet rolls, a load of sticky backed plastic and a couple of paper plates. He does not stick it all together and shout “He’s one I made earlier!” No, God did not have any ‘stuff’  as a starting point; rather He made it all, including the resources.  God also did it all by Himself – a bit like an exam at school; in His best handwriting and alone.

Everything God made is dependent on Him, just like a newborn baby is dependent on her mother for life.

God is not dependent on the world or anything in it, He is free. He is not like a builder who has built a house (the world), waiting for the person living in the house (us) to pay the invoice for His work. This is because of God’s Transcendence.

God did not create the universe by accident, nor was He bored. God wanted it to happen, he, as one of my daughters always says about the other one “did it on purpose.” This is because God is Omnibenevolent – all good. What God created was good (see Genesis 1), not bad or evil.

Bad and evil are a result of The Fall.

  1. Paul Brayshaw says:

So back at the beginning of everything, was God a triune God. I mean in the beginning was the Word etc. John 1. So was God on his own at creation or did he have Jesus and possibly the Holy spirit and were they as one? Definitely got me thinking tonight.

    • By God being on His own, I mean the Triune God:Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God did not have any help beyond Himself. I have not written about the Trinity yet, so don’t want to confuse everybody.
